9 Candy Bar Tips & Tricks

Candy bars are still going strong and while there are some people who claim to be sick of them or that they are outdated I think they couldn't be more wrong. I think candy bars will stand the test of time - I mean, who doesn't love candy?!

If you are thinking about doing a. candy bar (or sweet cart) for your wedding, there are a few things you need to know first that will save you a lot of time and headache later on. Here are the top 10 Tips and Tricks to help get you through!

1. Don't Do Chocolate

Chocolate melts and you don't need to deal with that mess on your wedding day. Stick to fruity chewy or hard candy. It makes much less mess. Speaking of mess - try not to buy individually wrapped candies, as the trash could make a big mess!

2. Buy in Bulk

The cheapest way to do a candy bar is to buy in bulk. I've found some really great deals on bulk candy on Amazon! Check out these: Cherry Sours, Sour Patch Kids, Runts, and Skittles!

3. Save Money on Jars

You should get decent looking jars, but don't spend a fortune on them. The best place to find decent jars is at resale events, consignment/antique shops, or even places like Walmart! Be sure to get jars with lids so candy stays fresh between setup time and reception time.

4. Save Money by Not Matching Your Colors

You can match the candy to the colors of your wedding by buying at places like Oriental Trading or any party supply store. However, color coordinated candy is like CRAZY expensive!! It is really not worth spending the money on--and it also really doesn't taste as good as the name brand stuff. Save yourself the expense and buy regular candy.

5. Don't Forget to Get Bags, Boxes & Scoops

Little boxes or cups are great for your guests to take some candy with them to their seat or even out on the dance floor. But I recommend you get bags as well - those are better for them to take candy with them after the wedding as a favor! Also, don't forget to get scoops for the candy so they don't have to stick their hands in the jars!

6. Decorate it!

Don't forget to dress up your candy bar with a sign letting people know what it is. You can DIY a sign for it or you can buy one. Throw a table runner down on the table with the candy (try a sequin one like I did for some added glam!). If you want some of the jars at a different level for easy access you can get stands to set them on. Vary the heights and types of your jars, and don't place them in a straight line. Think about the "composition" of your candy setup. It will be more appealing if it looks like you planned it to maximize visual impact.

7. Know Where You'll Put it!

Decide where it will work in your venue. Make sure you put the candy bar somewhere obvious, where people will be sure to see it. But also keep in mind that with all those breakable jars, you don't want it near the dance floor! I put mine on the same table with my cake.

8. Don't Bother Labeling Every Jar

Labeling every jar might be cute and help everyone know what candy is what, but it's more time and money and is actually not necessary. Most people will gravitate toward candy they easily recognize, whether it's labeled or not. Just try to buy stuff you wouldn't need to label!

9. Get the Right Amount

This is the tricky part. It's better to get too much and have leftovers than to get too little and have some people that don't get any. General rule of thumb is to buy about 1/4 pound of candy per person!

10. Candy Bars are not Just for Kids!

Adults love candy bars too! I actually had a kid-free wedding, but my husband and I are candy fanatics, so we still did a candy bar. You know what?! It was a HUGE hit! All the adults loved it!
