DIY Candy Agate Slices

So, this one isn't totally wedding related... but it's still an awesome, fun DIY that is really great for bridal showers, engagement parties and more! Having an agate, geode or gemstone-themed wedding? Consider giving these out as favors!

What You'll Need:

Assortment of Hard Candy

Oven

For this DIY you'll want a large selection of hard candies to choose from. What I found in trying this is that jolly ranchers are very hard to crush, dum dums work GREAT, rock candy does not work.

For mine, I used dum dums, a few jolly ranchers (though I do NOT recommend those), green spearmints, and blow pops (only crushed until the gum was exposed - then I ate the gum).

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2) Start by separating the candies by color into ziplock bags. Double bag or even triple bag them, because crushing the candy does tend to tear the bags up a bit.

3) Crush the candy using a hammer, rolling pin or other object that makes crushing easy for you. The finer the pieces, the better this works, so try to turn them into a powder — or close to it.

4) Using your hands, form tin foil circles with turned-up edges (or use individual silicone cupcake molds). They don't have to be perfect — agates usually aren't perfectly circular. I recommend using tin foil if you want a more "realistic" look. The silicone molds make perfect circles that look less realistic, but it is a little easier since you don't have to shape them.

5) Put a few pinches of candy dust in the center of the first mold. Then push it to the outer edge using your finger. (I found it works best to work from the inside out like this.) Push the candy to the outside edge to create your first colored "ring."

6) Continue this until you have it completely filled with candy.

7) Continue this with the rest of your molds until they are complete.

8) Place them onto a baking sheet, pop them into the warm oven and watch them closely. They can take anywhere from seconds to minutes to melt completely, depending on what candy you used. Make sure they are completely melted before you remove them: they should look like the colors are liquid and beginning to blend into each other a little.

9) Take them out and let them cool for a couple of minutes — careful not to let them cool too long. If you used tin foil, I found the easiest way to remove them was to start at one edge, peeling the foil back, then start another edge, and work your way toward the middle. If you used silicone molds, I found it easiest to wiggle the edges of the mold until the candy popped free and then turn the mold upside down. Stack them between sheets of parchment paper until you're ready to use them.

10) Put them on cupcakes, cakes, or use them as a garnish on plates! You can even put parchment paper between them and put them in a favor box for your guests!
