How To: DIY Flower Crown
Flower crowns are all the rage right now, and I recently had a very good friend of mine ask me to make her a flower crown for her wedding! I've never made one before but I am very creative and crafty so I figured I'd give it a shot! Well, guess what, it went really well! With the exception of making it a tiny bit too small for her (which I will explain how that happened and how to fix it if it happens to you)! I also have to say, this was not my first time messing with flower arrangements. I worked at Michael's for a few years and they let me play from time to time. You want to make your own DIY flower crown? Here are the instructions to help get you through it! Also, you might want to check out our DIY PhotoBooth Tutorial as well!
The first thing is to gather supplies.
You will need:
Silk Flowers (I would not recommend using real flowers if this is your first time)
(Possible: Hot Glue Gun)
Next is creating!
1. Play with different layouts on the floor!
Lay the flowers out in multiple different ways, then decide which one you would like to go with.
2. Measure Your head
It is important that you measure your head the same way you want to wear the crown. For example:
3. Add about an inch.
This is IMPORTANT. Once you start wrapping all the greenery and flowers on, the amount of space is going to shrink. This is where I went wrong when I made mine. I followed another DIY instruction online that said to add 1/4" and it was not nearly enough.
4. Add at least 1-2" for wrapping.
DO NOT CUT the wire at your measurement + 1 inch. Add a couple inches and then cut. (You will need these additional inches in the next step)
5. Cut and connect your wire.
Cut your floral wire at your measurement + 1 inch + 2-3 inches.
For example, if your head measured 23" you want to cut your wire at about 26-27 inches.
After you have cut the wire, you can begin wrapping. Measure your length of wire to the measurement + 1 inch (in our example that would be 24") then wrap your wire to itself as shown below to form a circle.
6. Cover up where it overlaps.
This is mostly to prevent the wire from poking your head. Use your floral tape to cover the wire where it overlaps.
7. Start with your greenery.
Now we get to start adding the actual greenery and flowers to your crown! Lay your greenery down on your crown (if you have a large center flower it is fine to leave a small gap where you want that to go, as pictured below). Secure the stem of the first greenery to the wire with the floral tape. If the greenery sticks off the crown more than you would like it to, continue wrapping up the greenery to secure more of it down to the wire.
Continue doing this over the entire wire surface until it looks like this:
8. Secure flowers to the crown.
Take your first, main flower (if there is a main flower) and set the stem on the wire. Once you have it placed the way you want, secure it to the wire as you did the greenery.
BONUS TIP: If you cut the stem too short, or if the flower doesn't have much of a stem, take a 4" (approximate) piece of the floral wire, bend it in half and shove the wire into the bottom of the flower. This should hold, though you may want to secure it with a bit of hot glue.
9. Continue securing the flowers all around the wire.
Make sure you are wrapping each stem very well so that it stays on the crown!
BONUS TIP: One issue I was having while making mine was that the flower heads continually fell off their stems. If this is happening, stop trying to make it work. Instead, get your hot glue gun out. Place a tiny drop of hot glue on the tip of the stem and immediately put the flower back on. The majority of the glue will go inside the flower, and what doesn't will not be noticeable. I eventually just stopped and glued ALL the flowers on, even the ones I hadn't started on yet because it was driving me crazy!
10. Once you have all the flowers on, try it on.
This is the time to make sure it fits! If it fits, congratulations!! You are done! Wear your flower crown proudly! However, if it doesn't fit, read on.
11. You have a few options if it doesn't fit.
One: Cut it at the back and instead of putting it on your head like a crown, secure it with bobby pins instead. If you go this route, I suggest reinforcing the area you cut with more floral tape.
Two: If you are set on an actual crown, do the same as mentioned above, cut the back of the crown. If it is too small: Make one cut at the back, attach as much wire as you need to extend it by wrapping the new wire to the old and securing the entire thing with floral tape. Cover with greenery (and small flowers if desired). If it's too big: You can either wear it too big (if it's not too bad!) by securing it to your head with bobby pins, or you can make one small cut (remove a piece of greenery if you have to) at the back. Take your two ends and twist them together. Secure with floral tape and add greenery or flowers to hide.
